Bruce Lehrmann Ordered To Pay $2 Million Following Failed Defamation Case

Bruce Lehrmann has been ordered to pay $2 million to Network 10 following his defamation lawsuit loss.

Lehrmann and Network Ten returned to court on Thursday to determine the legal costs accumulated during the proceedings and who was accountable of paying.

Listen to The Briefing’s episode following the April 2024 defamation lawsuit loss:

The Federal Court agreed to Network Ten’s nominated lump sum – which the network said it had discounted heavily from $3.6 million.

In April, Lehrmann lost his defamation suit against Network Ten and journalist Lisa Wilkinson.

Justice Michael Lee finding on the balance of probabilities, Lehrmann raped Brittany Higgins at Parliament House in March 2019.

The finding was in relation to the 2021 interview with Ms Higgins and Ms Wilkinson on The Project, where Ms Higgins said she first alleged she had been raped, however did not state Lehrmann’s name.

Lehrmann has lodged an appeal to the Fedral Court against Justice Lee’s ruling.

The finding by Justice Lee came after the 2022 trial against Lehrmann over the alleged rape collapsed, having found nothing against the former Liberal staffer who has maintained his innocence.
