Australia’s ban on puberty blockers reinstated in Queensland

Celebrations by pro-queer and trans groups have been short-lived after the Queensland Supreme Court overturned Australia’s first ban on puberty blockers only for the state’s health minister to issue a new order hours later.

The state’s controversial freeze on puberty blockers for adolescent teens in public hospitals was first introduced in January after revelations children as young as 12 were being prescribed them, in some cases without parental knowledge.

Justice Peter Callaghan yesterday ruled in favour of a parent of a transgender child who brought the legal challenge.

He ruled the directive establishing the ban was made improperly and was unlawful, finding health service executives were given just 22 minutes to consider it.
