The three victims of a suspected murder at a luxury resort in the Philippines have been identified as Australian couple David James Fisk and Lucita Barquin Cortez, along with Lucita’s daughter-in-law Mary Jane Cortez.
A staff member at the picturesque Lake Hotel in Tagaytay city, south of Manila, discovered the bodies on Wednesday.
Police reported all three victims had their hands and feet bound, and mouths covered with packaging tape.
Tagaytay police chief Charles Daven Capagcuan said that Mr Fisk’s throat had been slit, while the women appeared to have been suffocated with a pillow.
Valuables in the hotel room, such as mobile phones, were left untouched. CCTV footage shows a suspect leaving the room in a black hoodie, maroon shorts, and sneakers, carrying a backpack.
Mr. Fisk’s family released a statement this morning, expressing their grief and seeking answers. “The love we have for our Father and Lucita is so dear, and this situation is like living a nightmare,” the statement read.
“We pray for answers and the truth in this horrific matter and just pray for their safe return to Australian shores.”
David’s daughters, residents of the Sutherland Shire, requested privacy during this difficult time and said they would make no further comment.
Tagaytay, about 60 kilometres south of Manila, is a popular tourist destination known for its cool weather and views of one of the world’s smallest active volcanoes nestled in a lake.
Local Mayor Abraham Tolentino expressed his shock and extended apologies to the families of the victims.
Mr Tolentino confirmed that Mr Fisk’s body would be flown back to Sydney, while the two women would be buried in the Philippines, with the government covering the funeral and burial costs.
