Australia Day Merchandise Won’t Be On Woolworths’ Shelves This Year

Woolworth Group has announced it will not sell Australia Day merchandise, citing the decision was made due to a decline in demand.

All 1,095 Woolworths supermarkets as well as 177 Big Ws across the country will be impacted by the decision, which came as the country continues a “broader discussion about 26 January and what it means to different parts of the community”.

The Australian flag, which is sold all year round, will still be available on shelves, but no other merchandise will be sold.

“There has been a gradual decline in demand for Australia Day merchandise from our stores over recent years,” a Woolworths spokesperson said in a statement.

“We know many people like to use this day as a time to get together and we offer a huge variety of products to help customers mark the day as they choose.

“Woolworths and Big W celebrate the best of Australia every day, and we’re proud to support the farmers, producers, and suppliers who work with us.”

My Deal, an online platform a part of the Woolworth Group, still has Australia Day merchandise available but through third-party retailers.

The announcement has caused a stir of reactions, many unsure of the decision.

“In 2024, I would’ve thought there was enough demand from customers for Australia Day products,” NSW premier Chris Minns said.

“It seems odd not to offer your customers a few green and gold thongs or southern cross stubby holders as Australians take a well-earned day off after a tough couple of years.”

Senator Jacinta Price said the decision would divide Australians.

“Aussies made it clear last October that they don’t want to be divided,’’ she said.

“Now, when most Australians are worried about how they’re going to afford their groceries, the activists running Woolworths are spending their time virtue-signalling and trying to divide us.’’
