Katy Perry is set to perform at the AFL grand final this year at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
After weeks of speculation, it was announced on Thursday that the 39-year-old American pop star will be the main event on September 28.
Kylie Rogers, AFL Executive General Manager of Customer and Commercial, shared the news on Sunrise, revealing Perry’s enthusiasm for the AFL. “She loves Australia. She is so excited to come out here.”
“I am not sure she has picked a team yet, so we are working on that, but she is just as excited as we are,” Rogers said.
“She is a global superstar who is going to rock the house on September 28.”
Perry also expressed her excitement online: “I’m so excited to be back in Australia and back at the mighty MCG to perform in front of 100,000 of the best and loudest fans in the world at this year’s Toyota AFL Grand Final.”
“See you in September Oi Oi Oi!”
Details of Perry’s performance are still being finalised, with Rogers announcing an ongoing collaboration with Mushroom Group and Perry’s creative team, Square Division.
“We have a world-class event on Grand Final day and we want world-class artists who are going to entertain our 100,000 fans throughout the game and our millions of fans worldwide,” she said.
Perry’s performance coincides with the release of her latest album 143, which features the lead single “Woman’s World”.
The AFL has a history of attracting high-profile artists, with past performances by The Killers, Ed Sheeran, and KISS.
