Attention Shifts To Shepparton And Surrounds As Flood Waters Peak

Flood focus in Victoria has shifted to the north, as moderate flood warnings remain in place for the Campaspe, Goulburn, and Latrobe rivers.

Residents in Shepparton, Murchison, and Echuca have been told to prepare for flood waters to peak from Wednesday.

While floodwaters aren’t predicted to reach the October 2022 levels, between 20-30 Shepparton properties and around eight Murchison properties lying on the river could be affected.

Floodwaters peaked already in Echuca at 6am, with the SES saying the river had stayed below the moderate flood level.

Speaking to ABC News Breakfast, Tim Wiebusch from the SES said there would be road closures across Shepparton and Mooroopna.

“The focus really from today is on the Goulburn where we’re starting to see that moderate flood peak this morning around the Murchison township at a peak of around 10.5 metres and that will then start to flow down throughout the day to Shepparton and Mooroopna,” he said.

“So, we will start to see flood levels rising around Mooroopna and Shepparton throughout the day and overnight tonight with a moderate flood peak around 10.9 metres there sometime tomorrow.”

In good news for Seymour, Rochester and Yea, flood waters are receding, allowing the towns to begin recovery efforts.

Residents in Rochester can breathe a sigh of relief Wednesday morning, with the SES confirming no home were inundated when floodwater reached its peak,

Wates in Rochester peaked two centimetres below what had been predicted and is now at minor flood levels and is receding.

The SES said however it is still not safe for residents to return as floodwaters cover the town’s roads.
