At least 15 people have been killed and 24 injured in a shooting at a university in Prague.
Police have described the incident as the Czech Republic’s worst mass shooting, which occurred in the philosophy department of Charles University.
The lone gunman has also been “eliminated”, police said – whose identity has not been revealed but understood to be a 24-year-old who was a student at the university.
His identity has not been confirmed due to the severity of his injuries.
At around 3pm local time, police received initial reports of the shooting, but had information earlier about the shooter, saying they received a tip he would be travelling to Prague with the plan to take his own life.
Shortly after the tip, police said they received information that a man, believed to be the suspect’s father, was found dead.
Students climbed out of windows and hid on balconies during the shooting, while others barricaded themselves in classrooms.
Czech president Petr Pavel said he was “shocked” to hear about the incident.
“I would like to express my deep regret and sincere condolences to the families and relatives of the victims that the shooting claimed,” he said on X.
“I want to thank the citizens for respecting the instructions of the security forces and providing maximum cooperation.”
Czech Interior Minister Vit Rakusan said it wasn’t believed the shooting was linked to any extremist ideology or groups.
