Albanese drops hints at election as early as mid-March

The Prime Minister has hinted parliament will not return after Thursday, with strong signs that he’s leaving room for an election between mid next month and early April.

Anthony Albanese could be calling the election this weekend. This comes as Parliament wraps up two sitting weeks for 2025.

What signs have we seen?

Labor has managed to get through a couple of legislative wins. These include three days of subsidised childcare for almost all Australian families, electoral funding reforms and toughened hate speech laws.

At the same time, Labor let go of policies that were stalling, including nature positive laws.

“Secondly, the Prime Minister seemed to be practising his attack lines that we’ll likely be seeing on the campaign trail,” said The Briefing host Sacha Barbour Gatt.

Albanese is quoted saying recently, “The leader of the opposition was a senior minister for everyday of the former government. Everyday. Every Australian will remember all too well what he means when he speaks about going back.”

Albanese also started visiting newsrooms in the press gallery at Parliament House yesterday, something he hasn’t done since he won the 2022 vote.

If these hints are anything to go by, Albanese could call it this weekend – or March 23rd, which is two days out from the budget.
