Six-time Olympic medallist Adam Peaty reported that worms were found in the fish served to athletes, raising concerns about the impact on their performances.
“I like my fish, and people are finding worms in the fish. It’s just not good enough,” Peaty said.
There have been criticisms of the food quality and service at the Paris 2024 Olympic Village.
Peaty said the previous Olympic Games in Tokyo and Rio offered far superior food services, but the Paris Olympics had issues with insufficient protein and long queues.
The Olympic Village’s sustainability efforts, aiming to make 60 per cent of meals meatless and one-third plant-based, have also faced criticism from Peaty.
He highlighted the importance of a meat-based diet for athletes’ performance.
The British Olympic Association set up a ‘performance base’ at a catering college in Clichy, where athletes have opted to dine instead of at the village.
Team South Korea also brought their own culinary team, including 15 Korean chefs and nutritionists, amidst the food shortage.
In response to the criticism, Paris 2024 organisers stated they are taking feedback seriously.
Partner Sodexo Live! is reportedly increasing supplies and deploying additional staff to improve service.
“We are listening to the athletes and have been working proactively to adapt,” a spokesperson said.
Peaty’s comments came after other challenges for the Games, including concerns over water quality in the Seine, which led to the cancellation of athlete training sessions for marathon swimming.
