3.6 Million Aussies Are Gambling More Amid Cost Of Living Crisis

Australians are turning to gambling as a “quick fix” as cost of living becomes uncontrollable, according to new research from Finder.

The survey found almost one in five Australians (18 per cent) have increased their gambling habits over the last year.

That’s the equivalent of 3.6 million Australians who have turned to everything from the powerball to pokies to try and make some extra money to make ends meet.

Three per cent of respondents said they were trying to win money because they’ve fallen behind on bills, with another three per cent hoping to pay off debts.

Of the respondents, millennials are twice as likely to gamble more compared to gen X, 29 per cent to 12 per cent.

Further data found four percent of people are gambling more than they were a year ago because it’s easier to do, while eight per cent gamble due to boredom.

Money expert at Finder Alison Banney said the findings are a result of people becoming more desperate for money.

“Households need financial relief, as all of these increases to household bills mean many people are struggling just to make ends meet,” she said.

“It’s much easier these days to part with your money via the multitude of gambling options now available, both online and in person.

“Many know that the odds of winning are extremely slim, but those who feel backed into a corner with their finances aren’t always thinking logically – they’re desperate and looking for any possible help going forward.”
