Twelve people were injured, and eight were hospitalised after a Water Airway from Doha to Dublin on Sunday experienced severe turbulence over Turkey.
According to airport authorities, Flight QR 017, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, was travelling smoothly until it hit a turbulent air pocket, causing chaos in the cabin.
Dublin Airport reported that the flight landed safely as scheduled just before 1pm local time.
Emergency services, including airport police and the fire and rescue department, were on standby to assist the injured passengers and crew members.
“Due to six passengers and six crew members reporting injuries after the aircraft experienced turbulence while airborne over Turkey, the aircraft was met by emergency services,” said in the airport statement.
Medical teams assessed all passengers on board, and eight were transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment.
Qatar Airways has launched an internal investigation into the incident.
“The matter is now subject to an internal investigation.”
This incident follows another recent turbulence-related event where a British man died of a suspected heart attack, and numerous passengers were injured when a Singapore Airlines flight from London experienced severe turbulence.
Experts said there had been an increase in turbulence reports in recent years, which some attribute to the effects of climate change on flying conditions.
