Maria Thattil chats with Hughesy, Ed and Erin on how her girlfriend, Moana reacted to watching her onscreen love scenes. Take a listen below.
The former Miss Universe Australia winner speaks about how important the representation of her queer, south asian Neighbours character is.
“I know that when I would watch south Asian people on television, it’d usually be things like Abu from The Simpsons,” Maria tells Hughesy, Ed and Erin.
“It’s very stereotyped.”
“So it’s cool that Neighbours is expanding to show different parts of Australia.”
Maria Thattil has begun her acting career on the TV show Neighbours and alludes that she has some steamy love scenes coming up.
Hughesy asks Maria whether her girlfriend Moana had to endure any of her love scenes on the show.
Maria Thattil admits that her girlfriend Moana had to watch her flirt with other characters on the show.
“She had to watch me flirt, and she just had this look on her face,” She tells Hughesy, Ed and Erin.
“She looked at me and was like, ‘that’s not how you actually flirt so it’s okay’.”
Maria reveals that while her girlfriend hadn’t been on the Neighbours set yet, she has watched Maria’s first episode and was surprised.
“Moana watched it and she was like, ‘you’re actually really bloody good!'”
Maria Thattil and her girlfriend Moana have been together for several months Maria reveals she sees her as a “life partner”.
“I was just very drawn to her.”
