Summer is upon us, and with the warmer weather comes an influx of messages organising get-togethers in the backyard for a barbeque or a pint down at the pub. With late-night socialising comes the temptation to have a social smoke. Perhaps the cigarette gets passed about and it ends up in your hand. After all, what’s the harm in smoking one or two?
But every cigarette does you harm. No matter how infrequently you smoke, every cigarette damages your health.
It doesn’t matter if the cigarettes you smoke are tailor-mades or rollies, menthols or non-menthols, or if they taste light or heavy, smooth or harsh. With every inhalation of cigarette smoke, you’re sucking in cancer-causing chemicals. It’s what Quit is calling the “con that kills”.
If you only smoke when you’re on a night out, you’re wrong to think you’re escaping harm.
According to Quit, menthol is a commonly used additive in cigarettes that masks how harsh, painful and damaging the toxic smoke really is. It also makes smoking more addictive. Similarly, tailor-made cigarettes have tiny holes pierced into the filter to mix air into the smoke that makes it feel lighter, but it’s just as harmful
Opting for rollie tobacco is also harmful. Roll-your-own tobacco contains at least as many additives by weight as the tobacco in tailor-made cigarettes.
No matter what cigarette you’re bumming off a mate, you’re still inhaling more than 200 toxic poisons.
Vapes don’t contain tobacco, but they contain hundreds of chemicals, some of which are known to hurt your health. Scarily, many chemicals found in vapes are untested — who knows what you’re breathing in!
Quit notes as well that many vapes contain nicotine, which is highly addictive. Besides getting you hooked, it’s known that people who vape are more likely to take up regular smoking as well.
As summer kicks into full swing and you start enjoying the sun at the pub, down at the beach or out at a music festival, think twice before engaging in some social smoking. Every puff is doing you harm.
