The 52-year-old radio host’s conversation with Joe, Carlo and Andrew started innocently enough, with Hughesy telling the boys about his upbringing.
Just as they started talking about Warrnambool (where Dave grew up), Andrew asked Hughesy whether the rural Victorian city had a strong immigrant community.
It was only when Hughesy mentioned his Italian uncle, Fernando Fiasco, that it dawned upon him: was Fernando still alive?
The ensuing investigation (which saw the quartet assessing death records, reaching out to family members and scouring the internet) would eventually lead to heartache, with Hughesy learning the devastating news while behind the microphone.
