Abbie Chatfield’s latest podcast episode “I’m At Rock Bottom” takes a candid look at the relentless trolling Chatfield faces daily, especially after a recent incident at the Australian Open where she was filmed without consent while working.
The media personality addresses frustration of being labeled “outspoken” and an “attention seeker,” viewing these terms as sexist attempts to diminish her voice. She paints a vivid picture of the constant harassment, comparing it to a nightmare work scenario:
“If every email that you send or every document that you send off for every meeting that you had ended with someone insulting you, you would lose your f-ing mind.”
In this episode, there is a mention of suicidal ideation. If any of the topics discussed are triggering for you, please seek help by visiting Lifeline’s website at https://www.lifeline.org.au/ or by calling 13 11 14.
Chatfield expresses her deep frustration with the current state of affairs, particularly the rise of far-right ideologies and men’s rights movements. She doesn’t mince words when calling out the silence of men in the face of such harassment:
“They are getting emboldened by the rise of the far right and by the rights of men’s rights movements. Like it’s just f-ing horrific. And less and less men are speaking out for women. Men are f-ing silent. They don’t do anything. And I’m in my workplace getting harassed, having someone film me… upload a video, and you know the comments is still ‘queen don’t look at this.”
The constant barrage of criticism has taken its toll, with Chatfield reaching a breaking point:
“And I’m just honestly f-ing over it. Like I’m really f-ing exhausted. And I’m beyond frustrated with the way that when I speak about these things or talk about them, I’m dismissed.”
Chatfield’s candid discussion serves as a powerful reminder of the human behind the public persona, challenging the notion that public figures should simply brush off persistent negativity. She calls for greater empathy and understanding, highlighting that the impact of constant criticism is deeply felt, regardless of one’s status or following.
